As a church we started a 21 day fast Sunday, January 4th at sundown. Over the next week few weeks I will be doing a series of blog posts to further explain the biblical practice of fasting...
What is fasting? Fasting is not simply going without food for a period of time. That is starving – maybe even dieting if you are a model – but it is not fasting. Biblical fasting is to refrain from eating food for a spiritual purpose. Or, maybe you could say it this way - fasting is denying your flesh certain pleasures for a season as a way of seeking God.
Fasting has been a part of a normal relationship with God from the beginning. I personally think it is because the weaker the flesh becomes, the stronger the spirit becomes, and the more sensitive we become to God. When you fast to seek God it’s as if your body is in a constant state of crying out to God.
As a deer gets thirsty for streams of water, I truly am thirsty for you, my God. In my heart, I am thirsty for you, the living God. When will I see your face? Day and night my tears are my only food, as everyone keeps asking, "Where is your God?"
