As a church we started a 21 day fast Sunday, January 4th at sundown. Over the next week few weeks I will be doing a series of blog posts to further explain the biblical practice of fasting.
Why don’t more believers fast? Probably fear.
I was the first person I personally knew who did an extended fast. I had one motivation – I felt led by God to do it. The moment I said yes to God my fear of fasting left, and the question “can I do it” never entered my mind again.
I will tell you this - I have fasted on many occasions, and the ones that I felt led by God to do were always the easiest. The ones where I simply said "something has to change" have always been the hardest, but the most personally empowering. I don’t think I would try a long fast unless I felt God leading me to do so.
Here is what you could expect should you decide to go all out:
- The first 3 to 4 days are usually the hardest. Once you get through those your biggest cravings and hunger pangs tend to go away.
- You will probably have headaches for the first couple of days, but once all the toxins have been flushed from your body you will probably begin to feel better than you did when you were eating that junk we call food. My exact phrase was… “I feel better fasting than I ever did eating."
- Your sense of smell will go off the charts – I could smell things on the other end of the house.
- You will probably be able to breathe better.
- Days suddenly seem much longer than normal (I don't know if it's because you don't have to stop and eat, but time seems to stand still).
- Your sleep will probably improve, but you will probably do less of it.
- You will lose weight… but that's a no brainer.
- YOU WILL SENSE JUST HOW NEAR GOD IS TO YOU!
- God is true to his word and He will reward you just like He said He would. Fasting always boosts my confidence in God because I see His faithfulness in action. I always see a breakthrough in some area of my life during a fast.
